چکیده

A 23-year-old otherwise healthy male presented with development of painful blackish discoloration of the right thumb and index finger and of the right big toe and area over the ankle (Figs. 1 and 2), as well as painful swelling of both lower limbs, especially on the right side (Fig. 3). Homans′sign was present bilaterally. His past history was not significant. Routine investigations, including complete blood count, coagulation profile, chest roentgenogram and ultrasound of the abdomen, were normal. The patient presented with evidence of an increased tendency to thrombosis, both venous and arterial. Doppler ultrasonography confirmed bilateral lower limb deep venous thrombosis with complete occlusion of the right radial artery. His echocardiography and HIV serology were

Oral contraceptive use, thrombophilia and their interaction in young women with ischemic stroke.

To investigate the role of oral contraceptives and their interaction with thrombophilia in ischemic stroke, a case-control study on women with a first ischemic stroke when younger than 45 years was carried out. Oral contraceptives doubled the risk of ischemic stroke in the first 6-18 months of use and hyperhomocysteinemia increased the risk by 3.5-fold. Carriers of factor V Leiden or prothrombi...

Pathology consultation on the laboratory evaluation of thrombophilia: when, how, and why.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) results from the interaction of the Virchow triad (venous stasis, endothelial injury, and hypercoagulability). Risk factors for increased hypercoagulability, or thrombophilia, include activated protein C resistance/factor V Leiden, the prothrombin G20210A mutation, deficiencies of the natural anticoagulants (antithrombin, proteins C and S), antiphospholipid antibodi...

Small Bowel Infarction by Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis due to Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase Gene Mutation

Acute mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT) is an uncommon form of intestinal ischemia with high mortality and usually occurs in the setting of preexisting comorbidities including thrombophilia and abdominal inflammatory conditions. Hyperhomocysteinemia has been known to be a risk factor for thromboembolism, often located on an unusual site. Considering that homocysteine metabolism is determined g...

Thrombophilia and its impact on pregnancy.

UNLABELLED In recent years thrombophilia has gained much attention as a risk factor for pregnancy complications. Whereas there is an established correlation between antiphospholipid-antibodies and pregnancy loss, data for other risk factors of thrombosis are less well established. Data suggest associations with antithrombin deficiency, hyperhomocysteinemia and also with factor V Leiden, prothro...

An update on hypercoagulable disorders.

Venous thrombosis is a cause of considerable morbidity and is often responsible for chronic venous disorders that frequently lead to visits to dermatologists and others involved in wound healing. Over the past several years, many new causes of thrombophilia have been identified and have dramatically altered the approach to patients presenting with thrombosis. Newly described abnormalities assoc...

Thrombophilia and adverse pregnancy outcome.

Congenital and acquired thrombophilias are the most common predisposing factors for thromboembolism, but they may also contribute to pathophysiological processes involved in recurrent pregnancy loss, fetal death, intrauterine growth restriction, placental abruption, placental infarction, and pre-eclampsia. The most common thrombophilias are deficiencies of antithrombin III, protein C, and prote...
